Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Human Rights Council (HRC) of Pakistan organized a demonstration outside the Karachi Press Club, demanding the immediate resignation of Mayor Murtaza Wahab and urgent legal action against those accountable for the devastating fire at Gul Plaza shopping mall, which resulted in the deaths of over 60 individuals and left numerous others injured.
The catastrophic fire that broke out at Gul Plaza on January 17 incited public outrage, with citizens criticizing both the Sindh government and the Karachi Mayor for their slow response.
As per the rights organization, a significant number of men, women, and children participated in the protests, including Jamshed Hussain, the Chairman of the HRC, alongside other Council members.
While addressing the crowd, Chairman Hussain remarked that the tragic incident at Gul Plaza “is not just an accident, but a result of criminal negligence by the relevant authorities, representing a serious violation of human rights.”
He emphasized that the loss of over 60 lives and the disappearance of many others is a clear indication of the failure of the Pakistani government system.
The Council highlighted that the one crore Pakistani rupees compensation per victim announced by the Sindh government is “grossly inadequate.”
They called for the establishment of a genuine investigation committee that does more than merely perform a ceremonial function, but rather one that identifies the responsible parties and ensures they face concrete legal actions.
The HRC stated, “Given the administrative failures in the city and the incompetence of the fire brigade, it is imperative that the Mayor of Karachi resign without delay.”
The rights organization asserted that officials from the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and the Fire Brigade, whose lack of preparedness and negligence led to this tragedy, must also be held accountable.
In his speech, Bashir Daras, President of the HRC Karachi Division, declared, “The incompetence of the SBCA and Fire Brigade has led to this devastating incident.” He demanded that full financial compensation be provided for the billions of rupees in losses incurred by affected traders, and that those injured receive top-notch medical care at the government’s expense.
The HRC of Pakistan cautioned that if justice is not swiftly delivered to the victims, the protests will expand.
