Srinagar, July 26 (NationPress) As the nation pays homage to the valiant sacrifices of its heroes on the 26th Kargil Vijay Diwas, numerous events are unfolding in the town of Drass, located in Ladakh, this Saturday.

The Lieutenant Governor of Jammu and Kashmir, Manoj Sinha, expressed his respect for the martyrs of the Kargil conflict, stating, “On Kargil Vijay Diwas, I honor our martyrs and salute their bravery, courage, and sacrifice. Our heroes triumphed in one of the harshest terrains on Earth, overcoming the enemy. The gallantry, valor, and ultimate sacrifice of our soldiers will serve as inspiration for future generations.”

The Army’s Northern Command based in Udhampur commemorated its courageous personnel by sharing on X, “As India observes the 26th #KargilVijayDiwas, the #NorthernCommand honored the unwavering bravery of our soldiers through a series of meaningful events.”

The Northern Command noted that activities ranged from cycling expeditions and marathons to cricket tournaments and Veer Gatha initiatives, as well as thrilling treks to battle peaks. Each endeavor celebrates the indomitable spirit of our armed forces.

“Special ceremonies were conducted to recognize the Next of Kin of Kargil heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in action, highlighting their extraordinary valor. These events symbolize the courage, resilience, and patriotism that characterize the heroes of our nation,” it added.

Today's celebrations at Drass will be graced by Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya, MoS Defence Sanjay Seth, and Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi.

The army is set to launch three initiatives in the Kargil district today, including a portal for citizens to pay ‘e-shradhanjali’ to martyrs.

The two union ministers arrived in Kargil on Friday, participating in cultural and other essential functions.

This very day in 1999 marked the army’s announcement of the successful completion of ‘Operation Vijay’, declaring victory following a grueling three-month battle.

The Union Sports Minister led a padyatra that included over 1,000 youth volunteers, veterans, armed forces members, families of fallen soldiers, and civil society participants in Drass.

The 1.5 km long padyatra began at 7 am from the Himabass Public High School grounds in Drass and concluded at the Government Higher Secondary School grounds in Bhimbet.

War veterans, families of heroes, and numerous dignitaries are in attendance for today’s celebrations in Drass.

The Indus Viewpoint is the third project inaugurated today, allowing visitors to reach the LoC in the Batalik sector. This project aims to provide insight into the conditions under which soldiers operate, along with the constant threats they face daily to ensure national safety.

Batalik, situated 10,000 feet above sea level, was a pivotal location during the Kargil war due to its strategic position between Kargil, Leh, and Baltistan.

This small village in the Indus River valley has transformed into a significant tourist destination.
