New Delhi, Nov 21 (NationPress) Former wicketkeeper-batter of India, Saba Karim, has called on the Indian team management to provide Sai Sudharsan with a consistent opportunity in the Test format to fully demonstrate his abilities.
Sudharsan was not included in the squad for the first Test against South Africa at Eden Gardens, which India lost by 30 runs. Following Shubman Gill's withdrawal from the second Test in Guwahati due to a neck injury, it appears that Sudharsan may take his place in the playing eleven.
“India should revert to a combination of two seamers and three spinners as that would be adequate for the conditions in Guwahati. It is crucial to strengthen your batting lineup, considering that young Indian batsmen, particularly in home conditions, have struggled. If you are invested in a young talent like Sai Sudharsan, it is essential to offer him sufficient opportunities to showcase his potential. Trust in a player grants him the freedom to express himself more confidently. That is what we anticipate from him. I am optimistic that Sai Sudharsan will rejoin the playing XI,” Karim expressed during his appearance on JioStar's 'Game Plan'.
Sudharsan, who made his debut during the England tour earlier this year, has participated in five red-ball matches for India, accumulating 273 runs, including two half-centuries. In his most recent Test against the West Indies in New Delhi, he achieved a remarkable 87 runs, marking his highest Test score, and contributed 39 runs in the second innings as India clinched a seven-wicket victory to sweep the series 2-0.
Legendary spinner and former head coach of India, Anil Kumble, has advised the home team to adjust their mentality to excel in the varying conditions of Guwahati to level the series 1-1.
“This team has succeeded before, and they certainly possess the ability. The challenging conditions at Eden Gardens forced the batters to adopt a different approach, contributing to their downfall. It’s essential to think in terms of sessions. Players cannot simply focus on getting quick runs through big shots; that strategy should not apply to everyone. As a spinner or any bowler, patience is key. If you lack patience, runs will be conceded, and the same applies to the batters. Adjusting your mindset is crucial, rather than solely concentrating on the immediate conditions,” the veteran spinner articulated.
