Bengaluru, July 23 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP has voiced its support for the ongoing protests initiated by traders and shopkeepers against the recent issuance of GST notices, which demand unreasonably high tax payments. The party is calling on the Siddaramiah government to halt any further notices and retract those already distributed by the Commercial Tax Department.
During a press briefing in Bengaluru, BJP State President and MLA B.Y. Vijayendra expressed, "The issuance of notices targeting small and medium traders by the Commercial Tax Department, on the instructions of the state government, has ignited a significant discussion throughout the state. Traders are experiencing substantial stress and concern. Instead of resolving the issue, the Chief Minister and his cabinet are preoccupied with blaming the Centre."
Vijayendra continued, "The Chief Minister should remember his public declarations about Karnataka leading in GST collections and his goal for the state to exceed Maharashtra. He has also established revenue targets for officials in this context."
"The reality is becoming evident. In a period where the state treasury is depleted, the Chief Minister, through his officers and the Commercial Tax Department, is engaging in the exploitation of traders. I implore the Chief Minister to recognize that these notices directed at small and medium traders are entirely unlawful. The state government is itself partaking in illegality," he claimed.
"The state must promptly cease the issuance of these notices and retract those already sent out," he insisted.
Vijayendra remarked, "Currently, traders have commenced their protest against the state government, and the BJP fully backs their efforts. Numerous essential goods are exempt from GST, yet those selling milk and curd are receiving notices from the Commercial Tax Department."
Additionally, he highlighted, "There exist three GST slabs; however, traders are indiscriminately charged 18 percent GST without adequate verification or dialogue. These notices are being dispatched solely because the treasury is bare. Traders across the state are living in fear."
"I urge the Chief Minister to reconsider and retract these notices immediately," he reiterated.
As tensions escalate between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP over this matter, traders throughout Karnataka have initiated a three-day protest beginning Wednesday.
In response, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has scheduled a meeting with the affected parties and trade organizations at his official residence in Bengaluru.
