Bengaluru, May 17 (NationPress) Karnataka is currently positioned as the second highest state in the nation for GST collection, and Chief Minister Siddaramaiah emphasized the need for concerted efforts to achieve the top position in the near future.
Siddaramaiah made these remarks during the inauguration of the Golden Jubilee celebrations held by the Karnataka Commercial Taxes Services Association in Bengaluru.
“Last year, the tax collection target was set at Rs 1,03,000 crore, and an impressive Rs 17,000 crore was collected beyond that target. For this year, we have set an ambitious goal of Rs 1,20,000 crore, and I urge officials to surpass it,” he stated.
He noted that the state's budget this year amounts to Rs 4,09,000 crore, with Rs 50,018 crore allocated for guarantee schemes.
“To date, Rs 90,000 crore has been utilized for these schemes. Critics argued that without proper funding for guarantee schemes, the state would face financial difficulties,” he added.
The Chief Minister acknowledged that the government's achievements are largely due to the diligent efforts of department officials.
“As the Finance Minister, I prefer not to meddle in the daily operations of tax officials. However, it is essential for officers to strive to meet their revenue collection targets,” he emphasized.
“Bengaluru continues to experience significant tax evasion issues, yet Karnataka leads in tax collection. The government is set to implement further reforms in the tax payment process. We will evaluate the requests from the tax officials' association and always address the legitimate needs of government employees. Disciplinary measures will be taken against those who neglect their responsibilities,” Siddaramaiah stated.
He congratulated the association on reaching its 50-year milestone, saying, “I commend all office bearers for their contributions to this achievement. With your support, I have managed the responsibilities of the Finance Department effectively.”
“Having served as Finance Minister, Deputy Chief Minister, and now Chief Minister, I am proud of our government’s successful two-year tenure. We will hold a public meeting in Hosapete, Vijayanagara district, on May 20 to celebrate this occasion,” he remarked.
Furthermore, the Chief Minister acknowledged the vital role of commercial tax officials in revenue collection. “I extend my gratitude to all officers. Responsible officials contribute to enhanced tax revenue, and the Commercial Tax Department has the potential to produce even higher returns,” he concluded.
