Bengaluru, July 22 (NationPress) The Karnataka High Court has issued notices to the Central Government and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) regarding a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) that calls for action against alleged unlawful toll collection at the Nagasandra toll plaza, located on the outskirts of Bengaluru.
A division bench, led by Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Joshi, reviewed the petition and has scheduled the next hearing for September 17. This PIL was brought forth by advocate A.V. Amarnathan.
The petition asserts that the contract for toll collection at this plaza lapsed in 2021, yet toll fees continue to be charged from commuters, predominantly through FASTag. This highway serves as a vital link, connecting nearly 20 districts across the state.
The PIL claims that despite the contract's expiration, substantial sums are still being amassed daily. It argues that toll collection within city limits is illegal, arbitrary, and unauthorized.
Additionally, the PIL requests comprehensive information regarding the toll revenue accrued at the Nagasandra toll plaza from 2021 to the present.
Previously, in a move to address toll collection irregularities, the NHAI had suspended 14 toll collection agencies following investigations initiated by the Uttar Pradesh STF that uncovered fraudulent practices. As a result of this inquiry, 13 user fee-collecting agencies faced a two-year debarment starting in March 2025.
In a prior statement to Parliament, it was disclosed that refunds amounting to Rs 12.55 lakh were issued in 2024 due to improper toll collections on National Highways. The NHAI also indicated that over Rs 2 crore has been levied in fines against user fee collecting agencies for incorrect fee deductions.
