Bengaluru, June 5 (NationPress) The Karnataka High Court has taken notice of the tragic stampede incident near Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru that led to the loss of at least 11 lives. On Thursday, the court initiated a suo motu Public Interest Litigation (PIL) and requested a report from the Congress-led Karnataka government.
The division bench, led by acting Chief Justice V. Kameshwar Rao, expressed its serious concern over this unfortunate event and has scheduled a hearing for 2.30 p.m.
During the proceedings, senior counsels Hemanth Raj and G.R. Mohan reported on the incident, pointing out significant security failures. They detailed how a massive crowd gathered on the High Court building, situated across from the Vidhana Soudha, to witness the government’s tribute to the RCB players.
In response to the incident, the Karnataka Police have filed Unnatural Death Cases (UDR) concerning the 11 fatalities resulting from the stampede. The Cubbon Park police have logged these 11 UDR cases, but no FIR has been filed as of yet, according to sources.
This decision has sparked public outrage, as the police had the option to hold the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) and the event management company accountable. Sources have indicated that no one has yet accepted responsibility. The UDR cases were initiated following instructions from senior officers, as per reports.
Social activist Snehamayi Krishna has lodged a complaint with the Cubbon Park police against CM Siddaramaiah, Deputy CM D.K. Shivakumar, KSCA officials, and others. In the complaint, Krishna has urged the police to file charges under Section 106 of the BNS Act.
A copy of this complaint has also been forwarded to the Chief Justice of the Karnataka High Court, as the petition calls for action against those responsible, emphasizing the seriousness of the situation.
The petition has also been dispatched to the DG and IGP, alongside the Police Commissioner of Bengaluru. The petitioner remarked that this matter is of great gravity and implicates the roles of the CM, Deputy CM, and other influential figures. A copy of the complaint was also sent to the Chief Justice and several others.
Meanwhile, post-mortem examinations for the 11 deceased individuals have been completed at Victoria and Bowring Hospitals, with the bodies returned to their families. The examinations were conducted overnight to ensure a swift handover.
The state government has declared Rs 10 lakh compensation for the families of the victims and has ordered a magisterial inquiry.
The BJP has characterized the stampede-related deaths near Chinnaswamy Stadium as “government-sponsored murders” and has called for the immediate resignation of Home Minister G. Parameshwara.
