Bengaluru, June 26 (NationPress) Karnataka Home Minister G. Parameshwara reported that over the past year, authorities have confiscated drugs valued at Rs 45 crore, including 4,000 kilograms of marijuana. Notably, several foreign students have been implicated in drug-related offenses.
This statement was made during the launch of the ‘International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking’ event held by the Bengaluru City Police at Kanteerava Stadium.
Parameshwara cautioned students against jeopardizing their futures through drug addiction, highlighting that they have promising paths ahead of them.
“A worldwide initiative is underway to combat drug abuse and human trafficking. There’s an emphasis on the risks associated with addiction. Individuals must comprehend the physical and mental ramifications of drug use,” he stated.
He assured that strict legal measures are being enforced to tackle drug trafficking. “Yet, laws alone are insufficient. We are crafting awareness campaigns that resonate with young minds. Should the issue persist, legal repercussions will ensue,” he emphasized.
He noted that in various states, the properties of drug traffickers are being confiscated, with cases being pursued under the Goonda Act.
“During the last Assembly session, the Chief Minister affirmed his pledge to eradicate drug use in Karnataka. Once labeled ‘Udta Punjab’ for its drug problems, we will prevent such a crisis in our state. More stringent actions will be implemented to eradicate drug activities,” Parameshwara declared.
In Karnataka, awareness initiatives have reached 6.5 lakh students. Law enforcement officers from every station are tasked with monthly visits to schools and colleges to collect information and monitor conditions. Each college is mandated to establish an anti-drug committee, he added.
“The State Police Department will maintain a zero-tolerance policy. Citizens are encouraged to report any drug-related activity using a QR code. It is essential for individuals to notify authorities about any illegal activities they observe in their vicinity,” Parameshwara urged.
The Home Minister authorized the online destruction process for the seized drugs worth Rs 45 crore.
He also introduced the ‘Raksha’ QR code, enabling the public to share drug-related information with law enforcement.
Leaders from various educational institutions, who partnered with Bengaluru City Police to promote awareness regarding the dangers of drug use, were recognized and honored.
