Bengaluru, July 15 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP party claimed on Tuesday that the state is evolving into a drug haven, aligning itself with northeastern states and Punjab, where the issue of drugs has escalated into a grave concern.
“The drugs that have devastated the youth in northeastern states and Punjab are now infiltrating Karnataka. The state is now part of that troubling list,” asserted N. Ravikumar, who serves as BJP’s Chief Whip in the Legislative Council.
He pointed out that drug-related activities are prevalent in cities like Kalaburagi, Bengaluru, and Mangaluru.
“Seizures of illegal substances are reported nearly every week. In Kalaburagi, Lingaraj Kanni - the Congress’s Kalaburagi South Block President, a significant figure, and an associate of Minister Priyank Kharge and Congress MLA Allamprabhu Patil - has been apprehended. He has allegedly been engaged in drug trafficking for years,” he mentioned.
Ravikumar also accused the son of leader Mallinath Sonth of participating in drug trafficking, asserting that he is also affiliated with Congress.
“He is said to have close ties with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, yet no measures have been taken against him,” Ravikumar claimed.
He noted that 120 bottles of banned substances were confiscated from Lingaraj Kanni, alleging that these were intended for trafficking and could be sold for substantial sums.
“Priyank Kharge, who ridicules BJP leaders and candidates, should clarify who these ‘golden disciples’ surrounding him are. What caliber of leaders does Congress consist of?” he questioned.
He called on the Home Department to initiate action, alleging that drug trafficking is occurring under police protection in Kalaburagi, likening it to a ‘Kalaburagi Republic.’
He urged Priyank Kharge to take moral accountability.
“The Kharge family has held power in Kalaburagi for 50 years. The region should have been drug-free. What actions are being taken?” he posed.
He mentioned that a few months prior, drugs were confiscated in Kalaburagi, yet no follow-up action occurred. Before Kanni’s arrest, Priyank Kharge and the local Commissioner had announced a campaign against drugs during a press conference. However, it was the Maharashtra police who apprehended Lingaraj Kanni, not the Karnataka or Kalaburagi police.
Ravikumar suggested that the Karnataka police did not arrest Kanni due to protection from Priyank Kharge and Allamprabhu Patil.
He added, “If banned substances are being trafficked openly, how can law enforcement be unaware? It appears that proximity to Priyank Kharge grants immunity from legal repercussions, even for criminal actions. We commend the Maharashtra police for apprehending Kanni.”
