Chennai, Sep 30 (NationPress) The general secretary of Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Vaiko, referred to the tragic loss of 41 lives, including many children, during a stampede at Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay's rally in Karur as an "unprecedented tragedy in the history of Tamil Nadu" and blamed the event's organisers for the chaos.
Speaking to the media in Chennai, Vaiko criticized the rally's planning, stating it was "poorly organised" and the "failures" in managing the crowd turned a festive occasion into a calamity.
"The rally was not adequately planned, resulting in an uncontrollable situation," he asserted.
He highlighted that Vijay's delayed arrival in both Namakkal and Karur on September 27 exacerbated the situation, as many were eager to see him.
"Mr. Vijay arrived late in Namakkal and was several hours behind schedule even upon reaching Karur district," he remarked.
Vaiko also accused TVK officials of attempting to shift the blame onto the state government.
"The government responded promptly. The Chief Minister and his Cabinet members arrived in Karur within hours and provided all necessary assistance. Nevertheless, some TVK members are making unfounded accusations against the DMK government. In an effort to redirect the public's anger away from the organisers, they are unjustly targeting the government. This is completely unacceptable," he stated.
Recalling historical context, Vaiko mentioned how former Chief Minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR) successfully managed crowds during his DMK campaigns.
"MGR would step down from his vehicle before reaching the venue, display the party symbol, and wave to supporters along the way. Similarly, Mr. Vijay should have anticipated a large turnout and acted accordingly," the MDMK leader noted.
He emphasized that all political parties should establish trained volunteer teams for effective crowd management to avert future tragedies at public events.
Vaiko expressed his inability to visit Karur due to health issues but extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving families.
He urged the public to exercise caution when attending large events.
"Individuals must also take personal responsibility when joining large crowds," he emphasized, reiterating that the duty of preventing such disasters lies with the organisers, the administration, and the attendees alike.
The tragic incident in Karur on September 27 has led the Tamil Nadu government to establish a one-member inquiry commission, headed by retired judge Aruna Jagadeesan, to investigate the event and recommend safety measures for future political gatherings.
