Srinagar, Aug 9 (NationPress) The arrival of the first freight train in Anantnag, Jammu and Kashmir, on Saturday represents a significant milestone for goods transportation in the region. This event also signifies the operational launch of the Banihal-Sangaldan-Reasi-Katra segment of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project.
This development connects the Kashmir Valley with the Indian Railways freight corridor, facilitating the seamless movement of goods into the Valley and beyond.
On August 10, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will virtually inaugurate the Vande Bharat Express train service that will run between Amritsar and Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra.
The local economy is expected to experience a substantial boost as transportation costs lower significantly, while also mitigating the risks associated with the Srinagar-Jammu highway, which is frequently disrupted by landslides, falling rocks, and other hazards.
The introduction of the freight train guarantees year-round transport of goods into the Valley, including its extensive horticultural products like apples.
The USBRL project spans several districts including Udhampur, Reasi, Ramban, Srinagar, Anantnag, Pulwama, Budgam, and Baramulla.
Constructing the USBRL has been an engineering feat and a testament to human resilience in one of the world's most challenging mountain terrains.
As a prestigious national project, the USBRL is a crowning achievement for Indian Railways.
The completion of this railway link has posed geological challenges due to the young Himalayas, requiring innovative technology to overcome them.
Notably, the project features the world’s tallest railway bridge over the Chenab River in Reasi district and India’s first cable-stayed railway bridge, the Anji Khud bridge.
The railway development has opened new job opportunities and improved road connectivity by establishing access routes in various regions along the track.
Alongside the Chenab Railway Bridge and the Anji Khud cable-stayed bridge, the route from Udhampur to Srinagar includes a total of 38 tunnels.
The train's arrival is a boon for students, entrepreneurs, horticulturists, and travelers, providing them with affordable, safe, and comfortable access to other parts of the country from the isolated Valley.
Currently, the train operates between Katra and Baramulla, with plans to extend services from Jammu railway station to Baramulla before the year concludes.
