Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 17 (NationPress) Booth-level officers throughout Kerala initiated a statewide strike on Monday in response to the death of Aneesh George, a BLO from Ettukudukka in Payyannur. Employee unions assert that his demise was linked to overwhelming workload during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
The strike, organized by the Joint Action Committee of State Employees and Teachers along with the Teachers’ Service Organisation Samara Samithi, will feature protest marches towards the offices of the Chief Electoral Officer and district returning officers.
Union representatives emphasize that the Election Commission should be held responsible for the excessive field-level duties assigned to BLOs.
They argue that the ongoing SIR initiative has imposed unprecedented stress on ground staff.
In light of the increasing criticism, the Office of the Chief Electoral Officer, Kerala, released a condolence statement expressing “profound grief” over the “untimely demise” of Aneesh.
This statement characterized him as a “sincere and dedicated official who performed his duties with exemplary commitment,” highlighting that BLOs are vital field-level personnel of the Election Commission.
Moreover, the statement reiterated that district election teams have been assisting BLOs to ensure all eligible voters are registered and emphasized that the entire election framework operates cohesively “to ensure no official faces undue hardship.”
Aneesh’s funeral is scheduled for 3 p.m. on Monday at Lourdes Matha Catholic Church, Ettukudukka.
His family asserts that the significant work pressure resulting from the revision process led to his mental distress.
However, Kannur District Collector Arun K. Vijayan previously stated that no connection had been found between the SIR duties and the suicide, noting that administrative assessments indicated Aneesh had effectively executed his responsibilities.
Political tensions have escalated, with the UDF and BJP claiming that Aneesh had received threats from CPI(M) workers.
The CPI(M) leadership in Kannur has dismissed these allegations as a ploy by opponents to create a diversion.
