Thiruvananthapuram, Nov 17 (NationPress) V.D. Satheesan, the Leader of the Opposition in the Kerala Assembly, accused CPI(M) members of being directly involved in the tragic suicide of Booth Level Officer (BLO) Aneesh George in Payyanur. He asserted that the officer faced immense pressure and threats related to the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.
Aneesh George, a BLO from Ettukudukka in Kannur district, was discovered hanging in his residence on Sunday.
His family claims that the demanding workload associated with the revision process led to his mental distress, a statement quickly refuted by the Kannur District Collector, Arun K. Vijayan.
Satheesan called for a “serious and credible inquiry” into the circumstances surrounding the incident and urged the Election Commission to address complaints from BLOs statewide regarding excessive workloads.
According to Satheesan, “CPI(M) leaders and workers allegedly threatened the BLO after he brought along a Congress Booth Level Agent (BLA) for SIR-related verification. The workload, requiring BLOs to visit homes up to three times and manage between 700 to 1,500 voters at each booth, contributed to this escalating pressure, leading to extreme distress for the officer.”
He noted that many BLOs are women who have consistently voiced their inability to meet current work expectations.
“Both CPI(M) and BJP are allegedly working to misuse the SIR to hinder the addition of UDF-leaning voters to the electoral rolls. Any attempts to undermine fair electoral processes will be met with political and legal challenges,” Satheesan stated.
In response, state Congress president and legislator Sunny Joseph expressed shock at George's death, revealing that it has come to light that CPI(M) in the region has been operating under a threatening atmosphere. He emphasized the urgent need for a transparent investigation to uncover the truth.
“We fully back the protests initiated by the BLOs,” Joseph said.
Veteran CPI(M) leader E.P. Jayarajan, from Kannur, criticized the Congress party, labeling their allegations as “baseless” and suggested they are willing to go to any lengths to distort the truth and vilify CPI(M).
