Thiruvananthapuram, Sep 2 (IANS) The state of Kerala, renowned for its rich coconut heritage, is set to play a pivotal role in the celebrations of World Coconut Day in India this Tuesday.
Marked annually on the anniversary of the International Coconut Community (ICC), the theme for this year is "Uncovering Coconuts' Power, Inspiring Global Action".
The program will be virtually inaugurated by Union Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, featuring the distribution of Export Excellence Awards, the launch of new publications by the Coconut Development Board (CDB), and an informative session on processing, value addition, and exports.
A significant aspect of this year's event is the introduction of enhanced farmer welfare schemes amounting to over Rs 30 crore specifically for Kerala.
Out of the 23,000 hectares of coconut cultivation across the nation poised to benefit, nearly 10,000 hectares are located in Kerala.
The revisions come as a response to escalating cultivation expenses, surging fertilizer costs, pest outbreaks, and climatic adversities affecting crops.
In some initiatives, financial aid has increased significantly, providing much-needed support to farmers.
The Kera Suraksha Insurance Scheme has also been fortified, offering insurance coverage up to Rs 7 lakh for coconut sector workers, with an affordable annual premium of merely Rs 143 per beneficiary. This measure is expected to deliver essential social security for countless laborers.
Over 1,500 farmers from 150 clusters are anticipated to participate in the event, alongside entrepreneurs, exporters, and policymakers.
By emphasizing productivity improvements, high-value products like virgin coconut oil, and broader export possibilities, the revamped schemes aim to rejuvenate the sector and guarantee enhanced returns for growers.
For Kerala, where the coconut holds a dual role as both a crop and a cultural symbol, these initiatives signify acknowledgment of its legacy and a renewed promise to its farmers' futures.
This World Coconut Day, the palm tree that embodies the state's identity is receiving bolstered policies and financial backing.
The event comes at a crucial time as Karnataka has recently surpassed Kerala to claim the top spot in coconut production in India.
