Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Feb 1 (NationPress) In the Budget proposals for 2026-27, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman has declared a significant initiative aimed at supporting high-value crops such as coconut, sandalwood, cocoa, and cashew in coastal regions to boost farmers' earnings.
The initiative also extends to agar trees in the North East and various nuts, including almonds, walnuts, and pine nuts in hilly areas.
This proposal is part of a comprehensive strategy outlined in the Budget to fulfill the third Kartavya, which emphasizes targeted efforts for enhancing farmer incomes through improved productivity and entrepreneurship, according to the Finance Minister.
As the world’s leading producer of coconuts, approximately 30 million individuals, including nearly 10 million farmers, rely on this crop for their livelihoods. To boost competitiveness in coconut cultivation, a Coconut Promotion Scheme is proposed to increase production and productivity via various interventions, including replacing old and unproductive trees with new saplings and plant varieties in major coconut-producing states.
The Union Budget 2026-27 also presents a dedicated program for Indian cashew and cocoa aimed at achieving self-sufficiency in raw production and processing, enhancing export competitiveness, and establishing Indian cashew and cocoa as premium brands on the global market by 2030.
The Union Government plans to collaborate with state governments to encourage specific cultivation and post-harvest processing, aiming to revive the Indian Sandalwood ecosystem.
To rejuvenate aging orchards and promote high-density cultivation of walnuts, almonds, and pine nuts, the Budget proposes a targeted program aimed at raising farmer incomes while engaging youth in value-added initiatives.
Additionally, the Finance Minister announced the launch of Bharat-VISTAAR (Virtually Integrated System to Access Agricultural Resources), envisioned as a multilingual AI tool that will integrate AgriStack portals and the ICAR agricultural practices package with AI systems. This innovation aims to enhance farm productivity, facilitate better decision-making for farmers, and mitigate risks by offering tailored advisory support.
