Kochi, Aug 11 (NationPress) Local authorities in Kothamangalam, Kerala have apprehended Ramees from Paravoor in connection with the tragic suicide of Sona Eldhose, a 23-year-old student enrolled in a Teacher's Training Course.
Sona’s mother reported on Monday that her daughter had been romantically involved with Ramees for some time, and they were allegedly pressuring her to change her faith.
“Last week, after she resisted their efforts to take her to Ponnani for conversion, she was locked up and physically assaulted,” stated the grieving mother. “She was willing to register their marriage but refused to convert.”
Ramees faces serious charges, including abetment of suicide and physical assault, following revelations of alleged coercion and abuse aimed at converting Sona. Tragically, Sona was discovered hanging in her residence on Saturday.
A death note, retrieved by police on Sunday, accuses Ramees of both physical and emotional torment, confining her to a room, and coercing her into conversion prior to marriage.
Furthermore, she claimed that Ramees's family and friends pressured her to change her religion, asserting that marriage would only be feasible post-conversion and that she would have to reside with them.
Authorities have secured evidence from WhatsApp messages indicating Ramees’s alarming response, “go ahead,” when Sona expressed suicidal thoughts.
Investigators also allege there is proof of Ramees physically assaulting her. His family members might also face charges as co-accused.
According to the note and statements from Sona’s family, their relationship began during college but later turned toxic.
The couple had contemplated marriage, but Ramees’s relatives allegedly insisted on religious conversion, threatening ostracism from the mosque if he did not comply.
Although Sona initially consented to conversion, she postponed it due to her father's recent passing.
Her brother claimed that despite Ramees's previous arrest for an immoral trafficking case, Sona had forgiven him.
Recently, Ramees purportedly took her to his home under the guise of visiting a friend, where he confined and assaulted her.
He allegedly arranged transportation to Ponnani for conversion, but when she resisted, he told her to end her life.
Authorities have confirmed Ramees’s employment as a temporary staff member at Kochi Airport.
The investigation is being conducted by the Kothamangalam police, and the case has been escalated from unnatural death to abetment of suicide following the discovery of the death note.
Interrogations of the accused are currently in progress.
This case has attracted significant public attention due to its grave allegations of coercion, abuse, and religious pressure.
