Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday, 8 June opened an INDIA bloc meeting in New Delhi by hailing the Opposition's collective defeat of what he called the Narendra Modi government's 'malicious' delimitation bills in the Lok Sabha, urging alliance partners to build on that momentum and confront the ruling dispensation across political, economic, social, and foreign policy fronts.

Key Remarks at the Meeting

Kharge cited 17 April 2026 as a defining moment of Opposition unity. 'On April 17, 2026, we demonstrated our unity and solidarity in the Lok Sabha in a very decisive manner when we all came together firmly to defeat the Modi government's malicious bills on delimitation. Now we must strengthen that same spirit even further and move forward, so that we can confront the many political, economic, social, and foreign policy challenges facing the country due to the Modi government's misgovernance,' he said.

The Congress chief used his opening remarks to present what sources described as a strategic blueprint for rebuilding the Opposition alliance, following recent setbacks in state Assembly elections. He called on all stakeholders within the bloc to contribute actively to making it a 'viable and tenable front' against the Centre.

Economic Concerns Raised

Kharge raised alarm over what he termed an 'extremely negative' economic environment, pointing specifically to the West Asia crisis as an aggravating factor. He argued that new investments are not arriving at the pace needed to generate employment, that private monopolies are expanding across multiple sectors, and that the future of MSMEs is in 'serious crisis.'

He also flagged persistent price rises in essential goods, claiming they were 'creating havoc for the common man.' On the examination system, he accused the government of complete mismanagement, alleging that paper leaks were 'betraying the hopes and aspirations of lakhs of youth.'

Constitutional and Governance Allegations

The Congress president accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government of assaulting the Constitution, misusing investigative agencies to bully political rivals, and discriminating against non-BJP state governments. He described the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls as having stripped 'millions of people' of their voting rights — a charge the government has not publicly acknowledged in this framing.

Kharge also claimed India's foreign policy had been 'completely compromised,' alleging that 'traditional values that India has long staunchly supported have not been upheld.' He further alleged that atrocities against weaker sections of society, 'especially in BJP-ruled states, continue relentlessly.'
