Mumbai, Oct 14 (NationPress) Filmmaker Kiran Rao, whose directorial venture ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has garnered 13 Filmfare Awards, is experiencing immense joy. In a recent interview with IANS in the Bandra West locality of Mumbai, she celebrated her film's success.
The movie showcases an unconventional narrative, emerging at a time when audiences in metropolitan areas typically lean towards action-packed or dramatic blockbusters. However, Kiran was steadfast in her vision, choosing to tell this story authentically without succumbing to commercial pressures.
When asked about the courageous decisions she made amidst the market's influences, she remarked, “One significant choice, considered quite bold and disruptive in today’s landscape, was casting newcomers. Many films bank on big stars and box-office draws. We believed in casting for authenticity, and I received complete support from Aamir Khan in this regard.”
Elaborating on her approach, she stated, “The essence of this narrative is inherently dramatic, requiring an immersive experience in a rather unusual and outrageous world. The credibility of the characters is vital for the audience's belief. Thus, prioritizing new talent was a major decision, and I credit Aamir Khan, our producer, for this.”
She also highlighted other significant challenges, including filming on location during the Covid-19 pandemic, which presented numerous restrictions. “We employed many background actors and shot at real railway stations with active trains passing by,” she explained.
“Another major hurdle was the film's theatrical release. Typically, a non-action film without star power would go straight to OTT in today's market. However, our producers were convinced that our film could succeed in cinemas, and eventually, OTT platforms helped it reach a broader audience,” she added.
Produced by Aamir Khan and Jyoti Deshpande, and presented by Jio Studios, 'Laapataa Ladies' is a creation of Aamir Khan Productions and Kindling Productions.
