Why Are Those Who Once Humiliated K.M. Mani Now Honoring Him?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 16 (NationPress) It is ironic that those who once publicly disparaged K.M. Mani, the founder of Kerala Congress (M), are now commemorating him with a memorial. This situation did not go unnoticed by the Leader of the Opposition (LoP), V.D. Satheesan, who voiced his criticism of the CPI-M while discussing the political trajectory of Kerala Congress (M).
Speculation has arisen that the party, which K.M. Mani founded and is currently led by his son Jose K. Mani, might exit the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) to join forces with the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
However, Jose has firmly rejected these rumors, and party officials have reiterated that Kerala Congress (M) will continue its alliance with the LDF.
Commenting on the Kerala government's recent allocation of land in Thiruvananthapuram for K.M. Mani's memorial, Satheesan regarded it as a long-awaited acknowledgment of the veteran leader's contributions to the state.
"Future generations must learn about K.M. Mani's legacy. He deserves this memorial, and further research into his impact should also be undertaken," noted the LoP, who emphasized that his party played a significant role in securing the land.
Satheesan did not hold back when criticizing the CPI-M, recalling how, in 2015, the same leaders had demanded K.M. Mani's resignation over allegations related to a bar scam, even suggesting he should "burn in hell".
"Those who once sought to shame K.M. Mani are now in positions of power. The very individuals who condemned him are now facilitating his memorial's land allocation," he stated, expressing satisfaction that his party contributed to this development.
The remarks from the Opposition leader underscore ongoing political tensions in Kerala, as well as the symbolic significance of Kerala Congress (M) remaining part of the LDF.
While Jose K. Mani's assurances have temporarily alleviated concerns about a potential shift to the UDF, this incident highlights the intricate dynamics of coalition politics and K.M. Mani's lasting legacy in Kerala.
K.M. Mani represented the Pala Assembly constituency from its inception in 1967 until his passing in 2019.
After his death, Jose K. Mani transitioned from the UDF to the LDF as an ally before the 2021 Kerala Assembly elections.
