Are Small and Big LDF Allies Rethinking Their Future Ahead of Kerala's Crucial Polls?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 14 (NationPress) With tribal leader C.K. Janu, whose political party is currently not aligned with any of the three political fronts in Kerala, openly expressing her intention to join the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF), political discussions across the state are rife with speculation. It appears that several smaller allies of the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) may be reassessing their future strategies ahead of two pivotal elections.
The UDF has already made overtures to its former ally Kerala Congress (M), with UDF Convenor and MP Adoor Prakash stating that they would be welcomed back with “open arms”.
The Kerala Congress (M), now under the leadership of Jose K. Mani—son of the late political figure K.M. Mani—was a long-standing UDF ally before shifting allegiance to the LDF prior to the 2020 local body elections.
This shift provided the Left with a significant advantage in Kottayam district during both the 2020 local body elections and the 2021 Assembly polls.
However, Jose encountered a setback in 2021 when he lost his father’s traditional stronghold—a seat held by the late K.M. Mani without defeat since 1967.
Despite this, Jose's party, which contested 12 seats, secured five, making them the third-largest ally in the Left.
With local body elections approaching in a few weeks and Assembly polls scheduled for April–May 2026, a faction within Kerala Congress (M) is reportedly advocating for a return to the UDF, resonating with Prakash’s invitation.
Discontent is also mounting among smaller LDF partners.
The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), which has one MLA and is led by media mogul M.V. Shreyams Kumar, is among those signaling unease.
Notably, both Shreyams Kumar and his late father M.P. Veerendra Kumar have a history of switching between rival political fronts, often strategically orchestrating their moves for maximum political advantage.
The catalyst for this emerging shift is believed to be the ongoing Sabarimala gold plating row, which has tarnished the image of the Communist Party of India (Marxist)-led Kerala government and diminished earlier discussions about a historic third term for Pinarayi Vijayan.
While C.K. Janu herself may not be a significant electoral force, her public readiness to align with the UDF—reportedly with the endorsement of Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi—could ignite a larger political realignment.
Whether this trend remains a trickle or evolves into a substantial wave of shifting loyalties may significantly influence Kerala's political dynamics as elections draw near.
