Kolkata, Sep 16 (NationPress) To shed light on the alleged harassment faced by Bengali migrant workers, as stated by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Chaltabagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja Committee in North Kolkata has chosen the theme 'Ami Banglay Bolchi' (I am speaking in Bengali) for this year's festivities.
In line with this theme, the puja committee aims to celebrate the beauty of the Bengali language, the historical language movement, and the contributions of various Bengali thinkers and reformers through its pavilion.
The entire mandap or pavilion will feature a message opposing the harassment of Bengali migrant workers and the disrespect shown towards the Bengali language.
Club member Mousam Mukherjee stated, "We have chosen the platform of Bengal's largest festival to send a strong message against the attacks on the Bengali language and its people. Many disregard our mother tongue and insult it. However, we take pride in our language. Its significance extends beyond borders and is recognized globally. Therefore, it is crucial to emphasize the value of the Bengali language to the public."
It is important to note that recent months have seen reports of alleged harassment of Bengali migrant workers nationwide. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has vocally opposed this trend, criticizing the BJP government at the Centre for allegedly targeting the Bengali language and its speakers.
She initiated a language movement to raise awareness and support for migrant workers who have reportedly been compelled to return to Bengal. The state government has also introduced a rehabilitation and financial assistance scheme called 'Shramashree' for Bengali migrant workers facing harassment and wishing to return home.
This initiative aims to assist returning workers in rebuilding their lives in Bengal. Under 'Shramashree', each returning worker is eligible for a one-time travel aid of ₹5,000 and monthly support of ₹5,000 for up to 12 months until they secure employment. A helpline number (18001030009) has also been established for these workers.
The BJP, however, has criticized the puja committee for addressing this issue while ignoring other pressing matters such as the RG Kar incident, recruitment scams, and widespread joblessness among candidates.
BJP leader Tarunjyoti Tewari remarked, "They are merely appeasing the state government, seeking to increase puja grants. There are numerous issues demanding attention, including corruption among Trinamool leaders, the RG Kar incident, recruitment scams, and job losses. Yet, they chose to spotlight a matter that flatters the state government."
