Will Kolkata's Wetlands Be Protected from Illegal Constructions?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Calcutta High Court has issued a directive prohibiting any new illegal constructions from obtaining electricity or water connections, according to court sources reported on Tuesday.
This ruling underscores the court's commitment to combating illegal building activities that encroach upon wetslands.
A recent case against unauthorized constructions encroaching on wetlands in eastern Kolkata prompted this decision. Justice Amrita Sinha made it clear that no new illegal constructions would be permitted to connect to essential services.
The court also empowered authorities to pursue legal actions against such illegal constructions in accordance with the East Kolkata Wetlands (Conservation and Management) Act, 2006.
During the proceedings regarding the illegal constructions, Justice Sinha made pointed observations. Additionally, the judge mandated that the landmark numbers of reserved lands in the wetland area be made publicly available on both the authorities’ website and in newspapers.
Moreover, it was ordered that the prohibited construction areas’ landmarks and numbers be published on the East Kolkata Wetlands Authority's website.
Furthermore, the court emphasized that this information should be disseminated in both English and local newspapers. A report detailing actions taken against illegal constructions must be submitted, with specific reference to this matter. The case is set for a follow-up on February 23 next year, with the report due on the same day.
Allegations of illegal construction on wetlands in eastern Kolkata have persisted for years, disrupting the city’s drainage system. Rainwater that once drained into these wetlands now flows back into the city, leading to severe waterlogging.
