Kolkata, Dec 24 (NationPress) Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim has instructed the state fire services department to perform thorough inspections of nightclubs ahead of the New Year's Eve festivities.

This decision comes in response to a tragic fire incident in Goa that resulted in 25 fatalities.

To mitigate potential fire hazards during the celebratory season, the Mayor has formally requested the fire department to assess the safety measures in all rooftop restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and hotels.

On Wednesday, Mayor Firhad Hakim indicated that these inspections were initiated to ensure that rooftop establishments are adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). To date, 83 restaurants have been inspected, with all complying with the SOPs. 'Nevertheless, I have appealed to the fire department to ensure that both small and large hotels, as well as bars and nightclubs, are following the SOPs during this festive time,' stated Hakim.

Earlier this year, a fire at a hotel in Kolkata's Mechua Fruit Market area tragically claimed 14 lives, significantly increasing scrutiny on the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC), police, and state officials.

In the aftermath of this tragedy, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally inspected several rooftop restaurants in the Park Street area, discovering inadequate safety infrastructure. Consequently, rooftop bars and restaurants in Kolkata were temporarily closed, and illegal constructions were dismantled.

Following extensive discussions, rooftop restaurants were permitted to reopen conditionally prior to the Durga Puja festival. Despite directives to enhance safety infrastructure and comply with guidelines within a specified timeframe, recent police and municipal inspections revealed that these measures had not been implemented. Many restaurant owners received warnings, and authorities emphasized the urgent need to enforce safety protocols, including the installation of proper fire safety systems.

Given the recent catastrophic fire at a nightclub in Goa, concerns have escalated within the municipal administration. As a result, it has been determined that not only rooftop establishments but all hotels, restaurants, and particularly bars and nightclubs expected to be busy during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, will require immediate fire safety inspections by the fire department.

Point of View

Ensuring public safety during festive celebrations is a priority. The proactive measures taken by Kolkata's administration reflect a commitment to safeguarding citizens in the wake of recent tragedies. This vigilance serves as a reminder for all local governments to prioritize fire safety and prevent similar incidents.
