Kolkata, Oct 18 (NationPress) The Kolkata Police executed a raid on Saturday, uncovering over 600 kg of prohibited fireworks, according to officials.
During the operation, authorities apprehended Md. Zeeshan (23), a resident of Tiljala under the Topsia police precinct.
As per police reports, three nylon sacks and 25 paper cartons containing various types of illegal firecrackers, including shells, kali pataka, and chocolate bombs, were confiscated, amounting to roughly 600 kg in total.
When questioned by police, Zeeshan disclosed that he had acquired the banned crackers for transport to Asansol in the West Burdwan district.
The confiscated items were seized in compliance with all legal protocols.
A senior Kolkata Police officer stated, "A case has been filed at Maidan Police Station under Section 9(B) of the Indian Explosives Act, along with 61(2)/223 (criminal conspiracy) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS)."
Meanwhile, until October 17, approximately 1,315 kg of illicit fireworks were recovered from the Patuli, Dhalai Bridge, and Garia crossing areas in Kolkata, while 36 kg were seized from the Bansdroni area.
"We are conducting raids and awareness campaigns throughout Kolkata to combat the illegal sale and use of banned firecrackers," the officer reported.
On Friday, the Kolkata Police issued stringent guidelines for Diwali and Kali Puja celebrations, allowing the use of only eco-friendly firecrackers.
Under these guidelines, the use of green firecrackers will be permitted only within a limited timeframe, from 8 to 10 p.m. on October 20, in an effort to reduce pollution and enhance public safety.
This initiative by the Kolkata Police follows a recent admonition from the Calcutta High Court to the state government, questioning whether they would consider banning firecrackers entirely.
In response to the High Court's observations, the Kolkata Police have intensified surveillance and enforcement efforts, incorporating drones to monitor high-rise rooftops and narrow streets as part of a comprehensive initiative to prevent the sale and use of banned firecrackers.
