Kolkata, Sep 29 (NationPress) The Meteorological (MeT) office announced on Monday that the city's skies will remain primarily clear for the next couple of days, boosting the festive mood of Kolkata, which has been facing a significant stretch of rainfall during Durga Puja.
Nevertheless, the MeT department cautioned that a significant shift in weather conditions is anticipated starting Wednesday night (Navami), with the possibility of heavy rainfall on Thursday, known as Dashami, marking the concluding day of Durga Puja.
An official from the Regional Meteorological Centre located in Kolkata's Alipore stated, "Yesterday, the weather was mostly clear, with just a few instances of light rain noted. The next two days will continue this trend of clear skies, with no heavy rain in the forecast. However, due to a low-pressure system developing in the Bay of Bengal, rain is expected to begin on Wednesday night. Heavy downpours are likely on Thursday and Friday."
On the other hand, the forecast indicates no heavy rains for the majority of South Bengal districts on Monday. However, light to moderate showers are expected. Rain accompanied by thunderstorms may impact four districts in South Bengal: South 24 Parganas, East Midnapore, West Midnapore, and Jhargram.
On Ashtami (Tuesday), thunderstorms and rain may occur in East Burdwan, West Burdwan, Birbhum, Murshidabad, and Nadia districts. Scattered light to moderate rain is also predicted for the remaining areas of South Bengal.
In North Bengal, thunderstorms and rain may affect regions of South Dinajpur and Malda on Monday. Rain is also expected in Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, North Dinajpur, South Dinajpur, and Malda on Tuesday, with heavy rainfall anticipated across most northern districts following Dashami.
The weather department previously indicated that a cyclonic circulation could develop in the North Andaman Sea on Ashtami. By Navami, this system may strengthen into a low-pressure area, triggering rain and thunderstorms across all districts of South Bengal, including Kolkata. Rain is also expected on Dashami. Furthermore, fishermen are advised against venturing into the northern and central portions of the Bay of Bengal, near the coasts of Odisha, West Bengal, and Bangladesh on Thursday and Friday due to rough sea conditions.
