Kritika Kamra Reflects on 60s and 70s Mumbai in ‘Matka King’
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 16 (NationPress) Actress Kritika Kamra is eagerly anticipating the launch of her new streaming series, ‘Matka King’, where she reflects on her experiences working in the vibrant Mumbai of the 1960s and 1970s.
The narrative of ‘Matka King’ centers around a gambling mogul who experiences an extraordinary ascent during the turbulent times of the 1960s and 1970s in Mumbai. The city's cotton mills play a significant role in both the storyline and its development.
Kritika portrays Gulrukh, a Parsi woman who significantly influences the evolution of the Matka gambling game. In an interview with IANS during the promotional activities for the show, she discussed navigating a story set in such a historical context.
She expressed to IANS, “The world was already crafted within the storyline. As an actor, you step into that realm the moment you arrive on set and don your character's costume. It serves as a portal into that era. Moreover, the language of that time adds depth. Life moved at a slower pace, reflective of the less advanced technology—an analog world.”
She also noted, “At one point, the Matka numbers start appearing on the phone in the show. It was intriguing because we often had to act as if there were no sounds, as technology was not as advanced then. An operator was responsible for connecting lines manually—a concept that I doubt the Gen Z audience would even recognize.”
“Today, we are oblivious to these processes thanks to technological advancements. It’s fascinating to explore aspects from an era even before my own. Yet, the human psyche and our perpetual hope resonate across time, making it relatable for portrayal,” she added.
‘Matka King’ seamlessly intertwines the technological aspects of its time with the narrative, serving as a medium to unfold the story.
The series is set to premiere on April 17 via Prime Video.
