Bengaluru, June 9 (NationPress) The Karnataka BJP expressed its satisfaction on Saturday with the Central Government's resolution to transfer the high-profile murder case of Hindu activist Suhas Shetty to the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
The Ministry of Home Affairs released an order pertaining to this decision on the same day. The Karnataka BJP had strongly insisted on an NIA investigation, accusing the Congress-led government in the state of attempting to obscure the details of the case.
Leader of the Opposition R. Ashoka and State President B.Y. Vijayendra raised concerns over why investigators had not yet probed the involvement of burqa-clad women at the crime scene, who allegedly assisted the suspects in fleeing the area. Ashoka also hinted at potential complicity within the police force regarding the murder.
He claimed that the police had leaked information about Suhas Shetty's movements.
In a statement acknowledging the decision, BJP State President Vijayendra remarked on Sunday, “In response to the concerns of the coastal populace, our Central Government's choice to entrust the murder case of Mangaluru Hindu activist Suhas Shetty to the NIA is a commendable move. I extend my gratitude to the Central Government for this.”
“The heinous murder of Suhas Shetty on a public roadway was intended to instill fear within the Hindu community in the coastal area,” he added.
“As the investigation faced obfuscation under the governance of the Congress-led administration, the hopes of his family for justice were dwindling. The Central Government's decision to assign it to the NIA has rekindled hope that the culprits will be brought to justice and the conspiracy of anti-national elements will be revealed,” he underlined.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) tasked with addressing communal unrest in the coastal region has been conducting operations perceived as favoring Muslims, specifically targeting Hindu activists and jeopardizing the futures of Hindu youth in the area. In this context, the police apparatus is being utilized to target Hindu activists and BJP personnel, creating a situation that may compel the BJP to initiate widespread protests, as stated by Vijayendra.
The central government’s order indicated, “The Central government has received pertinent information regarding the Suhas Shetty murder case from Karnataka police, involving various sections of the law, including the BNS Act and the Arms Act. The case involves an attack on Suhas Shetty on May 1, while he was traveling in a vehicle with others, by one Safwan and eight accomplices, leading to severe injuries and Suhas Shetty's eventual death in the hospital.”
The order further stated: “Sections of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UA(P) Act 1967) apply here, as this incident is related to a targeted killing in public view intended to instill terror among the populace, with the accused allegedly affiliated with the Popular Front of India (PFI), an unlawful organization.”
“Given the circumstances, the Central government believes that an offence under the NIA Act, 2008 has occurred, necessitating investigation by the NIA due to the case’s serious nature, national implications, and the need to uncover a larger conspiracy,” the order concluded.
It is noteworthy that the murder of Suhas Shetty occurred in the backdrop of a mob lynching incident involving Mohammed Ashraf in Mangaluru, who was targeted for allegedly shouting slogans in favor of Pakistan, which intensified communal tensions in the sensitive coastal region. Suhas Shetty was also implicated in the murder of Mohammed Fazil, who was killed in retaliation for the murder of BJP leader Praveen Kumar Nettaru amid the hijab controversy in Mangaluru district.
