Did the Modi-led government really prevent starvation deaths in Kerala?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kochi, Nov 1 (NationPress) Former Kerala BJP state president K. Surendran expressed gratitude towards the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Central government for ensuring that no starvation deaths have occurred in the state.
Earlier today, during a special one-day session of the Kerala Assembly, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan announced that his administration has eradicated extreme poverty. In response, the Congress-led UDF opposition staged a walkout, labeling the session as "a mere charade".
Surendran criticized the Vijayan administration's assertions about eliminating extreme poverty, calling them little more than a public relations stunt.
He highlighted that significant welfare initiatives benefiting the poor, such as free ration distribution under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana, toilet construction, and drinking water supply through the Jal Jeevan Mission, are entirely financed and executed by the Central government.
“The Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY) has been delayed due to the Kerala government's failure to release its share for nearly seven lakh houses,” Surendran noted.
He further pointed out that numerous other Central schemes have also faltered due to the state government's unwillingness to provide matching funds.
“Kerala has neither renewed its contract under the Urban PMAY scheme nor allocated funds for the Jal Jeevan Mission. The Chief Minister should clarify what the state has accomplished from its own resources to alleviate poverty among its citizens,” Surendran stated.
According to him, a significant portion of the 60,000 families identified as extremely poor by the state are CPI(M) supporters, while many still reside under tarpaulin sheets lacking proper housing.
“No other state in India is conducting such a misleading program in the name of eliminating extreme poverty,” he claimed.
Surendran asserted that the Central government is making substantial efforts to uplift people from poverty nationwide, accusing the Kerala government of propagating false narratives.
“Similar to the inflated claim of being a fully electrified state, this is yet another publicity stunt,” he remarked.
He also accused the Pinarayi Vijayan government of intentionally hindering the implementation of the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme, which provides coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per family under the leadership of PM Modi.
