Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 31 (NationPress) Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's pre-election welfare initiatives and the state's assertion of being "free of extreme poverty" have sparked intense criticism from both the Congress-led UDF and the BJP. They claim the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) is misleading the public with "fabricated claims" and "election-time theatrics".
Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan accused the LDF government on Friday of "constructing illusions with false statistics" to create a favorable impression before the upcoming 2025 local body elections.
"While eradicating extreme poverty is a commendable goal, what the government is currently doing is nothing short of statistical deception. It’s a fraud on the populace," Satheesan stated.
He highlighted that the LDF’s 2021 election manifesto identified 4.5 lakh families in Kerala as extremely poor, yet the latest government list includes only 64,000 families.
“What happened to the remaining families? What magic trick reduced the number so drastically?” he inquired, noting that the new list was created without input from the State Planning Board or statistical agencies.
Satheesan accused the government of taking advantage of the poor for political benefit.
“For four and a half years, the poor were neglected, and now they are being used as propaganda tools. This is pure election drama,” he claimed, urging artists and celebrities to distance themselves from the government’s "poverty-free Kerala" event.
Similarly, Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar launched a fierce critique of Chief Minister Vijayan, questioning how the government intends to deliver on its promises while the state is “burdened with Rs 6 lakh crore in debt".
“After nine and a half years in power, he suddenly remembers the poor, unveiling ‘new’ schemes already mentioned in the 2021 CPI(M) manifesto that were never executed,” Chandrasekhar wrote on social media, contrasting Vijayan’s management with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “track record of delivery from Day 1 to Year 11".
He claimed that Kerala’s economy was being operated like a "Ponzi scheme", with funds being misallocated from pensions, health, and housing projects to cover interest payments.
“Drama, PR, and corruption don’t cultivate prosperity—they merely deceive the public,” Chandrasekhar pointed out.
A special session of the Kerala Assembly is scheduled for Saturday to discuss the “poverty-free” declaration. Satheesan mentioned that the UDF parliamentary committee would convene to determine its response.
In the evening, Chief Minister Vijayan will host a public event to officially declare this initiative, with film stars Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Kamal Haasan expected to join him on stage.
