Is V.D. Satheesan Right to Accuse LDF of Fund Misuse?

Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 13 (NationPress) - The Leader of the Opposition in Kerala, V.D. Satheesan, raised allegations on Tuesday against the ruling CPI-M-led Left Democratic Front (LDF) for purportedly using government funds for election campaign activities, deeming this act as “unacceptable and unethical.” He warned of potential legal measures aimed at recovering public funds that he claims have been misappropriated for partisan gains.
Satheesan accused the Public Relations Department, under the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, of orchestrating a government-funded quiz competition just two months prior to the elections, where children were reportedly instructed to answer with “Pinarayi Vijayan” for all questions.
He labeled the initiative a “shameful programme” that is unprecedented in Kerala, asserting that it represents the misuse of state resources for electoral advantage.
“This will ultimately lead to a personal embarrassment for the Chief Minister and a disgrace for Kerala,” Satheesan remarked, urging for the immediate cessation of the programme.
Moreover, he expressed concerns over CPI-M volunteers allegedly canvassing door-to-door while using government funds for election-related activities, asserting that all political entities should finance their campaigns independently.
“We have no objection to any electoral endeavors, but public finances should not be involved,” he maintained.
Satheesan warned that officials facilitating such actions would face consequences, asserting that the UDF is prepared to engage in a legal struggle to fully reclaim funds diverted from the government treasury for CPI-M’s election activities.
At the same time, he hinted at significant political shifts on the horizon as the Assembly elections approach, suggesting that members from both LDF and NDA, along with independent leaders, may soon transition to the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).
“In just a few days, which you can literally count on your fingers, you will see these surprises unfold,” he teased, opting not to disclose the parties or individuals involved.
Satheesan clarified that the Kerala Congress-M continues to operate within the LDF, and the UDF will refrain from questioning the credibility of the party.
“When the moment arrives, the media will be notified. A surprise revealed in advance ceases to be a surprise,” he stated.
As the Assembly elections draw closer, Satheesan’s pointed criticisms of the ruling coalition and his suggestions of forthcoming political realignments indicate a more assertive stance from the Opposition, as the UDF seeks to leverage allegations of state resource misuse and evolving political dynamics in Kerala.
