Kochi, Oct 30 (NationPress) - The Congress party has accused the Pinarayi Vijayan-led LDF government in Kerala of exploiting welfare schemes as a “political tool” in the lead-up to local body elections. The recent announcements have been described as a desperate effort to conceal administrative shortcomings.
Leader of the Opposition V.D. Satheesan stated that the government is attempting to mislead voters with last-minute incentives.
“We welcome any advantages for the less fortunate and the general populace. However, prior to taking office, the LDF promised to increase the social security pension to Rs 2,500. For four and a half years, no action was taken. Now, just before the elections, they have raised it by Rs 400 to Rs 2,000,” he highlighted.
Satheesan further criticized the state for belittling the ASHA workers’ protests, claiming the government offered only a token increase of Rs 33.
“The honorarium must see a significant increase. Even the High Court has mandated this,” he asserted.
He noted that welfare fund debts have reached alarming levels, with the government owing nearly Rs 1 lakh crore to employees, teachers, and pensioners.
“To assert that the Nayanar government initiated the pension scheme is a blatant falsehood,” Satheesan remarked.
He accused the government of misleading the public for over four years and dismissed claims of 18 months of arrears during the Oommen Chandy administration as a CPI-M “fabrication.”
The Opposition leader challenged both the Chief Minister and the Finance Minister to provide evidence for their claims.
He added that the UDF is set to regain power in 2026 with a majority of over 100 seats.
“The Congress will spearhead that resurgence. The notion of confusion within Congress is a CPI-M narrative; the genuine turmoil lies within the LDF,” he asserted.
AICC General Secretary K.C. Venugopal echoed these criticisms, likening Vijayan to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
“Vijayan is mirroring what PM Modi does — deceiving the populace with unachievable promises. He has governed Kerala since 2016 and is approaching a decade in power without fulfilling commitments made in 2016 or 2021. The public will see through these gimmicks and react accordingly,” Venugopal stated.
