Opposition Condemns CM Vijayan's Government for Front-Page Ads on LDF Achievements

Thiruvananthapuram, March 5 (NationPress) A political storm has erupted in Kerala following the state government's release of front-page advertisements in major newspapers on Thursday. These ads showcased what they termed the “transformations achieved by the LDF government” in areas that were reportedly neglected during the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) administration (2011-16).
Distributed via the state-operated Information and Public Relations Department (I&PRD), these advertisements juxtaposed conditions prior to 2016 with advancements made under the leadership of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
The advertisements featured excerpts from UDF-era newspaper headlines, highlighting issues such as electricity shortages, the Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) nearing collapse, delays in welfare pension disbursements lasting up to 18 months, and obstacles in National Highway upgrades.
On the internal pages, the ads underscored what the government characterized as enhancements under the LDF's governance.
These included claims that the state has not faced significant power outages recently, welfare pensions are now issued timely, National Highway projects are approaching completion, and the financial health of KSRTC has improved.
However, the initiative has faced strong backlash from the opposition Congress party, which accused the government of misappropriating public funds for partisan propaganda.
Leader of Opposition V.D. Satheesan criticized the move, suggesting that it compelled the Public Relations Department to “stoop so low.”
“Those accountable for this must provide justification. How can public funds be utilized to discredit a former government? We will take both legal and political actions against this,” he stated.
Congress General Secretary and Alappuzha Lok Sabha representative K.C. Venugopal asserted that the advertisements breached established guidelines by using taxpayer money to spread what he described as misleading information.
He further noted that even posthumously, attempts were being made to target the former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy.
Former Home Minister and senior legislator Ramesh Chennithala also condemned the action, accusing the government of “wasting taxpayer resources” through what he termed an abuse of power.
“The Information and Public Relations Department now operates from the office of the State headquarters of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) in the capital,” Chennithala alleged.
This controversy arises as political activity amplifies in Kerala ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections, with the ruling LDF and the opposition UDF exchanging accusations over governance and developmental progress.
