Key Takeaways
Kozhikode, Nov 11 (NationPress) Former Kerala BJP president K. Surendran has accused the state government of depriving its citizens of significant benefits from Central schemes by neglecting to allocate its share of funds.
Surendran pointed out that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's flagship initiative, 'Jal Jeevan Mission', which aims to ensure tap water supply to every household, has come to a halt in Kerala due to the State's inaction.
He claimed that while the Centre has sanctioned Rs 7,600 crore, the Kerala Government has failed to provide its matching contribution.
According to him, this same negligence has hindered numerous other Central projects.
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana-Urban (PMAY-U), designed to facilitate affordable housing, has seen minimal progress, as has the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, which aims to enhance rural connectivity.
Surendran remarked that despite the Centre declaring major cities in Kerala as Smart Cities, problems like waterlogging in Thiruvananthapuram remain unresolved.
"Through the AMRUT scheme, Kozhikode received substantial Central funding that helped upgrade vegetable and fish markets. Kochi Corporation also received crores for waste management. However, due to excessive political meddling by the State, the benefits of these initiatives have not been realized by the populace," he stated.
The BJP leader further criticized the government for hindering the Ayushman Bharat- Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, thereby depriving millions of families of its advantages.
"Kerala stands out as the only state where citizens are denied this health coverage because the Left government aims to promote its own parallel initiative," he alleged.
Surendran indicated that this failure to work in harmony with the Centre is indicative of a broader governance crisis.
He noted that numerous welfare and development programs intended for ordinary citizens are either postponed or overlooked. The NDA, he asserted, presents an alternative political model to address this stagnation, emphasizing that the BJP's goal is to realize the Prime Minister's vision of a 'Viksit Kerala' - a thoroughly developed state.
Surendran's critique of the Pinarayi Vijayan administration followed the announcement of local body elections in two phases.
Kerala will hold elections on December 9 and 11, with vote counting scheduled for December 13.
