Can BJP Claim Credit for Kerala's Poverty Eradication?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Oct 31 (NationPress) Kerala's Minister for Local Self-Governments, M.B. Rajesh, expressed strong criticism towards the state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) for attributing the eradication of extreme poverty in the state to Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"Some individuals are asserting that the credit belongs to Prime Minister Modi. They can only claim that once India as a whole is free from extreme poverty," Rajesh stated.
This comment was made in defense of Kerala's declaration as the first state in India to eliminate extreme poverty.
Interestingly, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan is set to officially announce this on Saturday, alongside renowned film stars such as Mammootty, Mohanlal, and Kamal Haasan.
BJP leaders in Kerala have been vocal in claiming that without PM Modi's support, this milestone would not have been achieved, prompting Minister Rajesh to respond critically.
Rajesh dismissed allegations that the declaration was made in haste or was politically motivated.
"This decision was not made impulsively. It was part of the very first Cabinet meeting of this administration, and a comprehensive set of guidelines was published. Had anyone read them, there would have been no confusion," he explained.
He emphasized that this declaration signifies the elimination of extreme poverty as per government definitions, not a total eradication of poverty.
"Those identified in this category are individuals who have yet to benefit from any governmental welfare scheme. We are not claiming that poverty has been entirely eliminated," he clarified.
Rajesh questioned why experts who now criticize the process did not voice their concerns earlier.
"If these issues had been raised before, we would have addressed them," he noted, assuring that the initiative was executed transparently rather than in secrecy.
As the state readies for the official announcement on Saturday—coinciding with Kerala Formation Day—criticism has emerged from local communities.
In areas like Vattachira Paniya Colony in Kozhikode district, numerous families continue to endure significant hardships, and some experts have pointed out that not all that glitters is gold.
