Seoul, Jan 25 (NationPress) South Korean President Lee Jae Myung has opted to retract his nomination for the position of budget minister amidst intensifying scrutiny related to the nominee's personal matters, as disclosed by a presidential spokesperson on Sunday.
Lee Hye-hoon, a former three-term legislator from the opposition, was appointed last month to head the newly formed Ministry of Planning and Budget, according to reports from Yonhap News Agency.
Since then, she has encountered numerous allegations of misconduct, including dubious real estate transactions involving her family and claims of improper treatment towards her subordinates.
“Following thorough consideration and deep reflection, President Lee has chosen to withdraw his nomination of Lee,” stated Hong Ihk-pyo, the senior presidential secretary for political affairs, during a press conference.
Hong mentioned that the president attentively considered various viewpoints from multiple sectors of society and closely analyzed her parliamentary confirmation hearing held on Friday, in addition to the public's feedback since.
“Regrettably, she did not fulfill the public’s expectations for the minister of planning and budget,” the senior secretary noted, adding that the president will persist in pursuing national unity through appointments that reflect a broad political spectrum.
The former nominee has been criticized for allegedly securing the rights to acquire a luxury apartment unit in southern Seoul in July 2024 by incorrectly listing her eldest son—who had already conducted a wedding ceremony at that time—as unmarried, purportedly to enhance her family’s eligibility for obtaining the purchasing rights.
Under the existing regulations, applicants for newly constructed apartments must earn subscription rights based on various criteria, including the number of family members and the duration of homelessness.
Lee has also faced backlash over allegations that her husband engaged in property speculation by buying extensive parcels of land near Incheon International Airport—located west of Seoul—approximately a year prior to the airport's official opening in 2001, along with her past endorsements of former President Yoon Suk Yeol's brief declaration of martial law in December 2024.
