Seoul, July 20 (NationPress) President Lee Jae Myung of South Korea announced on Sunday that he would retract his nomination for Education Minister nominee Lee Jin-sook, as stated by the presidential office, in light of controversy surrounding allegations of academic plagiarism.

Despite this setback, the president appears inclined to move forward with the appointment of Gender Minister nominee Kang Sun-woo, who has also been criticized publicly due to allegations of workplace abuse involving former aides in the Parliament.

“After careful consideration, President Lee has chosen to withdraw the nomination of Lee,” Woo Sang-ho, the presidential secretary for political affairs, mentioned during a press briefing, urging the National Assembly to take prompt follow-up actions.

This decision was made just 21 days after Lee selected the architecture professor as the inaugural education minister of his administration.

Lee Jin-sook has been under scrutiny due to claims of improperly facilitating her daughter’s overseas education at a young age, alongside the plagiarism accusations, which prompted some opposition lawmakers to demand her resignation, as reported by Yonhap news agency.

The presidential office did not provide comments on the president's intentions regarding Kang, leading to speculation that the appointment for the gender minister nominee will continue as planned.

Responding to this speculation, the presidential secretary clarified that the only retraction made was concerning the education minister nominee.

“While there are varied opinions, I hope the public comprehends that this decision was made after thorough evaluation,” Woo expressed.

On July 19, political parties faced off once more over essential Cabinet nominees, particularly the scandal-ridden picks for gender equality and education ministers, following the conclusion of parliamentary confirmation hearings.

The ruling Democratic Party (DP) urged the main opposition People Power Party (PPP) to cooperate in finalizing the Cabinet lineup proposed by President Lee Jae Myung, warning that ongoing delays could impede efforts to rejuvenate the economy and address public issues.

“It is crucial to finalize the Cabinet to restore economic stability and public livelihoods,” stated Rep. Baek Seung-ah, spokesperson for the party's floor leadership.

Baek criticized the PPP for only agreeing to adopt confirmation reports for nominees related to the economy, foreign affairs, and trade, while delaying others, particularly those of Kang Sun-woo and Lee Jin-sook.

Point of View

It's clear that the withdrawal of Lee Jin-sook's nomination reflects a broader issue of accountability in government appointments. While the president's decision is commendable, it also highlights the challenges faced in forming a stable Cabinet amid public scrutiny. The focus must now shift to how the government can address the pressing concerns affecting the economy and public welfare.
