Kannur (Kerala), Jan 8 (NationPress) – A court in Kerala's Kannur has delivered a life sentence to seven individuals affiliated with the RSS and BJP in connection with the 2008 murder of CPI-M worker K. Latheesh, marking a significant conclusion to one of the area's most heinous acts of political violence.
The Thalassery Additional District and Sessions Court also levied a fine of Rs 1.40 lakh on each convict, resulting in a cumulative sentence of 35 years under four legal provisions, to be served concurrently.
Previously, the court declared the first seven accused guilty, while those numbered nine to twelve were acquitted.
It is noteworthy that the eighth accused passed away during the trial.
The individuals convicted include P. Sumith, K.K. Prajeesh Babu, B. Nidhin, K. Sanal, Rijosh, Sajeesh, and V. Jayesh.
CPI-M activist, leader of the CITU fishermen’s union, and local committee member, Latheesh, aged 28, was brutally murdered on December 31, 2008, around 5.30 PM at Chakyathumukku beach in Thalassery.
The prosecution described how the attackers first detonated bombs to instill fear before pursuing Latheesh and assaulting him with swords and axes.
In a desperate attempt to escape, he ran towards a friend’s house but was ultimately overpowered and fatally attacked.
Additionally, Latheesh’s friend and fellow CPI-M member Mohanlal, also known as Lalu, sustained serious injuries during the assault.
Three others, identified as Santosh, Suresh, and Majeed, were injured in the bomb blast and required medical attention.
The prosecution's narrative indicated that the assailants converged from various locations as an armed group, encircled Latheesh, and initiated the attack.
It was alleged that Sumith delivered the first strike with a sword, whereas Prajeesh Babu inflicted a fatal injury with an axe targeting Latheesh's neck.
Even after Latheesh succumbed near the shoreline, the assailants persisted in their attack before fleeing the scene, after throwing additional bombs.
Out of 64 witnesses listed, 30 were cross-examined during the trial.
A case was filed based on a complaint from Latheesh's brother, K. Santosh. This verdict is being interpreted as a pivotal judicial stand against politically motivated violence in northern Kerala.
