Johannesburg, June 9 (NationPress) The Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC) in South Africa has initiated a search mission after a light aircraft vanished on Sunday while navigating over KwaZulu-Natal Province. Tragically, three individuals on board have been confirmed deceased, according to a local government representative on Monday.
Siboniso Duma, a member of the Executive Council for Transport and Human Settlements in KwaZulu-Natal, released a statement on Monday morning regarding the missing aircraft that had three people on board, including a reported student pilot.
"ARCC has informed us that the aircraft departed from Virginia Airport (Durban) around 15:00 on June 8, 2025, and failed to arrive at its alternate destination. The last tracking showed it flying over Ladysmith, heading south towards either Pietermaritzburg or Greytown," Duma stated.
"Given the severe weather conditions forecasted by the South African Weather Services, we have decided to support ARCC in their search and rescue efforts," he added, as reported by the Xinhua news agency. The South African Weather Services has issued a warning for thunderstorms and snowfall anticipated in KwaZulu-Natal from June 7 to 11.
In a follow-up announcement on Monday afternoon, Duma confirmed that local authorities received an updated report from ARCC stating that all three passengers aboard had tragically been found deceased.
"ARCC has informed us that they will be transferring the case to the South African Police Service's Accident and Incident Investigation Division and the South African Civil Aviation Authority for an official inquiry," Duma mentioned.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of the deceased passengers," he concluded.
