New Delhi, Sep 1 (NationPress) Liverpool has finalized a historic transfer deal for striker Alexander Isak from Newcastle United, according to recent reports.
Isak was eager to depart the club, yet Newcastle denied an initial offer of around £110 million from Liverpool despite him having three years left on his contract.
As per a report by Sky Sports, Liverpool has now consented to pay a staggering £125 million, setting a new British transfer record for the striker. He is expected to sign a six-year contract with Liverpool and undergo a medical examination on Monday morning.
Earlier this summer, Isak was absent from Newcastle's pre-season tour in Asia due to what the club termed a minor thigh injury. He subsequently trained alone at his previous club, Real Sociedad, while Liverpool's first bid was rejected by the Magpies.
Isak significantly contributed to Newcastle's strong season, netting 27 goals in 42 games across all competitions, helping secure UCL football for the upcoming season and ending the team's trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup.
With ongoing speculation regarding his future, Isak expressed his discontent on social media, stating that promises made by Newcastle had been “broken” and that their “relationship can't continue”.
He stated, “The reality is that promises were made and the club has known my position for a long time. To now act as if these issues are only emerging is misleading. When promises are broken and trust is lost, the relationship can't continue. That's where things are for me right now – and why change is in the best interests of everyone, not just myself.”
Newcastle reacted quickly, issuing a statement shortly after Isak's post, asserting that they would only consider selling him if it aligned with the club's best interests.
“We want to retain our top players, but we also recognize that players have their own aspirations and we respect their opinions,” the statement read.
