New Delhi, July 23 (NationPress) The Lok Sabha commenced its operations for the third day of the Monsoon Session on Wednesday, featuring a number of significant bills slated for discussion. However, the intense protests and chanting by Opposition members resulted in the House being adjourned shortly after it opened.
As the Lower House gathered for its legislative business this morning, members of the Opposition began to shout slogans and crowded into the well of the House to express their dissent.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed strong disapproval of the ‘conduct and behavior’ exhibited by the Opposition legislators. He offered pointed advice for them to ‘adhere to the law and uphold the high standards of Parliament,’ but his request went ignored, and the shouting persisted.
Speaker Birla also criticized the display of placards within the House, stating, “The nation is observing your conduct. I may have to take action against members displaying banners. This House is for dialogue and discussion, not for slogans. Everyone must work to preserve the decorum of the House.”
As the turmoil continued, he adjourned the House until noon.
Upon reconvening, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya introduced the National Sports Bill, which aims to bring the Indian Cricket Board, BCCI, under government oversight. Experts suggest that if this bill is approved by Parliament, the cricket body will no longer function as an autonomous entity.
On Day 3 of the proceedings, chaos erupted over the Opposition’s ongoing demand for an urgent discussion regarding the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in Bihar. The government has expressed readiness to debate all matters, with time set aside for discussions on Pahalgam and Op Sindoor. However, the Opposition is determined to focus on the SIR issue, alleging widespread manipulation of electoral rolls in the upcoming elections in Bihar.
The first two days of Parliament were largely unproductive, with minimal business conducted. The government and Opposition clashed over numerous issues, with the latter insisting on an urgent debate concerning the security lapse in Pahalgam, Operation Sindoor, and Trump’s claims of negotiating peace. The unexpected resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar after the first day of the session further complicated the situation.
