Mumbai, Sep 19 (NationPress) To accelerate road development in Mumbai, the Speaker of the Maharashtra Assembly, Rahul Narwekar, issued instructions on Friday for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to prioritize only those road works that are partially finished during October.
He emphasized that all these projects need to be finalized by December, stating that no new road excavations will be permitted unless there is a distinct local request, which must be discussed with local elected officials.
These directives were presented during a crucial meeting that included prominent figures such as Mumbai BJP President and MLA Ameet Satam, BMC Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, Additional Municipal Commissioner Abhijeet Bangar, and other senior civic authorities.
“We have issued clear instructions that no new road work will commence without specific local demand and after consultations with the relevant elected representatives. Furthermore, footpaths will now be built using stamped concrete instead of paver blocks to enhance durability,” stated Satam following the meeting.
He also mentioned that roads under 9 metres in width will be constructed with mastic asphalt—a proposal he initially suggested in a prior review meeting back in March.
“This suggestion has now been officially accepted by the BMC,” he added.
Addressing concerns about road quality, BJP leader Satam indicated that the BMC has been instructed to refer all complaints about substandard road works to the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) for technical assessment and follow-up actions based on IIT’s recommendations.
“Currently, 50% of the overall road work has been completed. To enhance transparency, the BMC will develop zone-wise dashboards for public monitoring of road development progress,” he added.
