Mahadev App kingpin Sourabh Chandrakar to face Raipur court after Oman extradition
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Sourabh Chandrakar, the alleged promoter and key accused in the Mahadev App illegal online betting syndicate, is set to be produced before a special court in Raipur on or before 4 November 2026, days after being extradited from Oman in a landmark cross-border enforcement operation. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) escorted Chandrakar back to India after the Royal Oman Police detained him on the basis of a Red Corner Notice issued against him.
Extradition and Transit Remand
A specially deputed CBI team travelled to Muscat and brought Chandrakar back to India two days ago. Delhi's Rouse Avenue Court has granted the agency a two-day transit remand, during which Chandrakar will undergo a medical examination before being transported to Raipur. He is expected to be produced before the CBI Special Court in Raipur on or before 4 November, where the agency is expected to seek further remand for interrogation.
Scale of the Mahadev Online Betting Syndicate
Investigations by the CBI revealed that the Mahadev Online Book was one of the largest illegal online betting syndicates in India, operated from outside the country. The platform offered illegal betting on cricket, football, card games, and other events through a network of franchised 'panels' and 'branches' spread across India. Proceeds were allegedly funnelled through a large number of mule bank accounts, layered across multiple transactions, and moved abroad via hawala channels. Part of the proceeds was reportedly used to pay protection money to public servants, allowing the syndicate to operate without hindrance.
Cases Filed and Charges Against Chandrakar
The CBI is investigating the Mahadev Online Book cases at the request of the Government of Chhattisgarh, which transferred 13 related FIRs to the agency. Chargesheets have already been filed in two of these cases under the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988, provisions of the Indian Penal Code relating to criminal conspiracy, cheating and forgery, and the Chhattisgarh Gambling (Prohibition) Act. Chandrakar is named as a key accused in both chargesheets.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) is separately probing the money-laundering angle and has filed a prosecution complaint against him. The ED has also attached several properties in India and abroad linked to the syndicate.
International Cooperation That Led to the Arrest
The extradition request was pursued in close coordination with Indian agencies, the Interpol National Central Bureau, and the competent authorities of Oman. The CBI has formally expressed gratitude to the Government of the Sultanate of Oman and the Royal Oman Police for their cooperation in facilitating the extradition. The operation marks a significant step in India's effort to pursue financial crime fugitives sheltering abroad.
What Happens Next
Once produced in Raipur, the CBI is expected to seek custodial remand to interrogate Chandrakar on the syndicate's operations, money trails, and links to public servants. The outcome of the remand hearing could open fresh leads in one of India's most high-profile illegal betting investigations in recent years.
