Maharashtra Chief Minister Addresses Discrimination in Housing Societies Based on Food Preferences

Nagpur, Dec 20 (NationPress) In light of reports indicating that non-vegetarians are being denied residences in certain housing societies, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asserted on Friday that no one holds the right to reject housing applications based on dietary preferences, whether vegetarian or non-vegetarian.
The Chief Minister responded to concerns raised during a session of the state Council after Shiv Sena-UBT legislator Anil Parab brought attention to the issue of non-vegetarians being excluded from homes in some residential communities.
He called for a clear statement from the government on this matter.
Parab urged Fadnavis's intervention following a troubling incident in Kalyan where a Marathi family was reportedly attacked by a family that spoke a different language.
"The Constitution grants every individual the right and freedom to make their own dietary choices. If a community values vegetarianism, it can certainly establish guidelines. However, no one has the right to deny housing in this manner. There is no justification for harboring animosity towards someone simply because they advocate for vegetarianism. Nonetheless, we cannot condone discrimination based on this principle. If any such complaints arise, suitable action will be enforced against those responsible.
"Our country is rich with diverse traditions. In states like West Bengal, fish is a staple for many communities, while other regions may predominantly practice vegetarianism. Thus, our cultural heritage honors both the spiritual and the material aspects of life. It is our duty to uphold this diversity within our nation," Fadnavis stated.
The Chief Minister of Maharashtra added that "just as we possess a national identity, we also cherish our regional identity."
"This regional identity signifies our unity as Marathi people. We take pride in being Marathi. Should anyone threaten this unity, we will not hesitate to take strict measures against them," he emphasized.
Previously, Anil Parab alleged that non-vegetarians are facing housing discrimination in several societies.
"Jain builders have ceased offering homes to Marathi individuals due to their non-vegetarian preferences. Who has the authority to dictate our dietary choices in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and the country? The Chief Minister must clarify the government's position on this issue," he stated.
