Maharashtra Government Denounces Injustice Towards Marathi Speakers in Border Regions

Mumbai, Dec 9 (NationPress) Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis declared on Monday that the state government unequivocally condemns the injustices perpetrated by the Karnataka government against Marathi-speaking communities in border regions, particularly in Belgaum.

The Chief Minister asserted that the Karnataka government's assertion preventing Marathi speakers from convening in Belgaum constitutes a breach of their constitutional rights.

Furthermore, he criticized the remarks made by a Karnataka minister concerning the removal of VD Savarkar's portrait from the Karnataka State Assembly, labeling it a serious matter and expressing the state government's condemnation of this act.

In a statement to the state council, the Chief Minister emphasized that the Maharashtra legislature stands resolutely with the Marathi-speaking populace in the border regions, asserting that the struggle for a unified Maharashtra, incorporating Belgaum and Nipani, will persist.

“The twelve crore residents of our state and Marathi individuals globally support their counterparts in the Karnataka border area. We have offered educational and healthcare services to the Marathi-speaking populace in these regions. Our government remains dedicated to addressing the challenges faced by Marathi speakers in border areas,” he stated.

Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde highlighted that the Karnataka government opposed gatherings of Marathi speakers in these border regions.

“A member of the Maharashtra Integration Committee was detained, and representatives of the people were also present. The Maharashtra Government strongly denounces this action by the Karnataka Government. I too have faced imprisonment in the struggle for the Marathi-speaking community, and our government’s approach mirrors that of Hinduhruday Samrat Balasaheb Thackeray,” he added.

The Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council, Ambadas Danve, raised concerns in the House regarding the Karnataka government's alleged intention to remove the portrait of VD Savarkar from their state Assembly.

He further criticized the Karnataka government for denying Marathi speakers the right to hold a public meeting in Belgaum.

Danve subsequently submitted a letter to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, advocating for the state government to propose to the Centre that Belgaum be designated as a unit of territory, especially in light of the injustices inflicted on the Marathi-speaking individuals by the Karnataka government.
