Will Key Players Survive the Acid Tests in Maharashtra's Municipal Corporation Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Dec 16 (NationPress) The forthcoming elections for the 29 Municipal Corporations in Maharashtra, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), scheduled for January 15, are poised to bring forth a highly competitive environment among prominent political entities, such as the BJP, Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena, Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray (UBT), Congress, Ajit Pawar-led NCP, NCP(SP), and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).
This election represents a crucial challenge for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in his efforts to uphold the BJP's leading status. Uddhav Thackeray must also navigate the complexities of maintaining authority over the vital Mumbai civic body, while Eknath Shinde is tasked with demonstrating his faction's genuine public backing.
All attention is directed towards Mumbai, historically a stronghold for Shiv Sena, which has governed the BMC since 1985, with only a four-year interruption.
The Shiv Sena faced significant challenges following Eknath Shinde's rebellion, leading to a split within the party. Numerous former corporators, initially elected on the unified Shiv Sena platform, have shifted their loyalties from the Thackeray camp to the Shinde faction, complicating Uddhav Thackeray's efforts to secure Mumbai.
Despite the absence of formal alliance announcements, Uddhav Thackeray has notably garnered the backing of Raj Thackeray-led MNS for this election.
The BJP is determined to claim power in Mumbai this time around. Both the BJP and Shinde's faction are fixated on overcoming Uddhav Thackeray, marking the Mumbai elections as one of the most fiercely contested and prestigious confrontations to date.
The results in Mumbai will serve as a litmus test for Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, and Shiv Sena(UBT) Chief Uddhav Thackeray.
A BJP triumph would significantly elevate Devendra Fadnavis's profile. Conversely, Uddhav Thackeray retaining control amidst these challenges would represent a considerable victory for him. Eknath Shinde needs to secure his influence in the Thane district. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar considers Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad, and several other Municipal Corporations vital to his strategy. The strength of Ajit Pawar's NCP is limited in Mumbai and Thane, with the BJP posing the primary challenge in Pune.
Interestingly, CM Fadnavis announced that the BJP and NCP will engage in a friendly rivalry in Pune and the neighboring Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation, aiming to prevent a third party from gaining an advantage. There is significant speculation surrounding potential alliances within the Mahayuti and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) during the municipal elections. The Congress has declared its intention to run independently in Mumbai. Last week, BJP state President Ravindra Chavan confirmed that his party would participate in the Mumbai elections under the banner of Mahayuti. Signs indicate that the Thackeray brothers, Uddhav and Raj, may collaborate in Mumbai and Thane, as they have grown closer in recent months, particularly regarding the preservation of Marathi pride and opposing the imposition of Hindi as a third language in schools.
For Shiv Sena(UBT), the Mumbai elections represent a matter of survival. Although the Thackeray faction outperformed the Shinde group in the Lok Sabha elections, the latter gained the upper hand in the subsequent Assembly elections. Following this, numerous leaders and workers from the Thackeray faction defected to the Shinde faction, underscoring the critical significance of this election for Uddhav Thackeray's faction.
In Nagpur and other Municipal Corporations in the Vidarbha region, the BJP is gearing up to contest independently as part of a strategic effort to enhance its standing. However, the Congress is facing a formidable challenge, not only to restore its influence but also to expand its presence in the Vidarbha region, which had been a stronghold until 2014.
Overall, the BJP is resolute in its objective to replicate the outstanding results achieved in the state Assembly elections during the upcoming civic body elections, while fostering alliances with Shiv Sena and NCP in nearly 27 municipal corporations except for Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad, aiming to establish a triple engine rule.
Conversely, the MVA, still reeling from the defeat in the state Assembly elections, is struggling to maintain its alliance as many of its members are shifting to the BJP and its allies.
Described as mini Assembly elections, both Mahayuti and MVA are preparing for a significant confrontation ahead.
