Should the Opposition in Maharashtra Demand Corrections in Electoral Rolls Before Local Body Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Oct 30 (NationPress) The Opposition factions in Maharashtra on Thursday asserted that the elections for local and civic entities should be postponed until the Election Commission addresses the inaccuracies in the electoral rolls, which involve duplicate voters, bogus voters, and the unjust removal of genuine voters’ names.
During a meeting led by former chief minister Uddhav Thackeray, leaders from Shiv Sena-UBT, Congress, NCP-SP, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), CPI-M, and the Peasants and Workers Party convened to assess preparations for the morcha scheduled in Mumbai on November 1. This protest aims to draw attention to alleged discrepancies in the voters’ lists and demand necessary corrections before the elections take place.
Anil Parab, a legislator from Shiv Sena-UBT, spoke to the press after the meeting, stating: "The Opposition is organizing a morcha on November 1 to unveil the truth regarding the discrepancies in the voters’ list. Prominent leaders, including former Union minister and NCP (SP) chief Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, state Congress chief Harshvardhan Sapkal, and MNS chief Raj Thackeray, will be participating in the protest."
Parab mentioned that the Opposition had previously met with the State Chief Electoral Officer and the State Election Commissioner to voice serious concerns about alleged "vote theft" during the assembly elections, highlighting the risk of similar incidents in the upcoming local and civic elections.
“There are numerous anomalies in the electoral rolls that the Opposition will address vigorously during the morcha,” he stated.
He also noted that the morcha is set to occur between 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. to minimize disruption for the residents of Mumbai. “The Opposition stands united in demanding justice regarding the concerns raised about the voters’ list,” Parab concluded.
Jitendra Awhad, a legislator from NCP-SP, accused the BJP-led Mahayuti government of abusing its power to stifle dissent.
"The government will initiate legal actions against Opposition parties for voicing these concerns. A case was lodged to exert pressure on NCP (SP) legislator Rohit Pawar, but neither he nor any other leaders are intimidated. This is the nation of Gandhi and Nehru," Awhad asserted.
Sachin Sawant, a spokesperson for the State Congress, stated that the Opposition parties have united to combat "vote theft" and will persist until the Election Commission guarantees fair elections by amending the errors in the electoral rolls.
In response to the Opposition's actions, BJP legislator Pravin Darekar countered, accusing them of misleading the public.
"Despite clarifications from the election panel, they continue to propagate falsehoods. Those living by deceit suddenly speak of truth. This is merely a political spectacle intended to garner sympathy. All the fraudsters have banded together out of desperation for power,” Darekar remarked. “The BJP and its allies will reveal their attempts to steal votes,” he added.
