Are Opposition Parties in Maharashtra Rallying for Transparent Elections?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Nov 1 (NationPress) Opposition parties in Maharashtra -- including Shiv Sena-UBT, Congress, NCP-SP, CPI, CPM, Peasants and Workers Party, and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) -- organized a morcha in south Mumbai on Saturday, urging party members and voters to be vigilant against vote theft, duplicate voters, and irregularities in electoral rolls, particularly with the upcoming local and civic body elections.
Describing the rally as a “truth morcha”, the opposition parties asserted their commitment to protecting the Constitution of India and advocating for free, fair, and transparent elections.
Prominent leaders such as NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar, Shiv Sena (UBT) president Uddhav Thackeray, senior Congress figure Balasaheb Thorat, and MNS chief Raj Thackeray called upon their supporters to remain alert ahead of the elections and to guard against irregularities in the voter lists.
They emphasized that the opposition had set aside their political divisions to unite in defense of the people's voting rights.
Activists from different opposition factions gathered in large numbers, shouting slogans that accused the BJP-led governments at both the Centre and in Maharashtra of taking control over constitutional and independent entities, including the Election Commission.
The morcha commenced at Fashion Street and ended at Azad Maidan, with opposition supporters waving party flags, carrying placards, and displaying banners that called for fair elections and clean voter lists.
Veteran Shiv Sena-UBT legislator Bhaskar Jadhav stated: “Today’s morcha will spark a revolution and shake the BJP, which has been winning elections through vote theft.”
NCP-SP legislator from Malshiraj constituency Uttam Jankar accused the state of vote rigging during assembly elections, asserting that the poll panel had ignored repeated requests regarding the deletion of votes and issues with electronic voting machines. He urged participants to thwart any attempts to disenfranchise genuine voters or manipulate EVMs.
Sachin Sawant, state Congress chief spokesperson, took a jab at the BJP, saying: “We have heard that the Bharatiya Janata Party has staged a silent protest against today’s morcha. Will the Election Commission also join this silent protest? We are eager to find out.”
Opposition leaders, including Uddhav and Raj Thackeray, questioned the urgency of conducting local and civic body elections despite significant discrepancies in the voter lists. They called for a postponement of the polls by a year to allow for rectification of these inaccuracies.
Sharad Pawar and other leaders urged their supporters to enhance outreach initiatives, ensuring that eligible voters are correctly listed. They also called for identifying duplicate and fraudulent voters to uphold the integrity of the electoral process.
