Is Maharashtra Government Intensifying the Hunt for Fake Medicines and Cough Syrups?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Nagpur, Dec 10 (NationPress) The Minister of Maharashtra's Food and Drugs Administration (FDA), Narahari Zirwal, revealed to the state Assembly on Wednesday that his department is intensifying efforts to uncover spurious (fake) medicines and cough syrups throughout the state.
Responding to inquiries from BJP legislator Amit Satam and others, the minister stated that the Food and Drug Administration has initiated a special campaign focused on testing cough syrups. Samples were dispatched to the State Government Hospital and the drug testing laboratory for thorough examination, and the results have been received.
Operations led to the cancellation of licenses for approximately 176 retailers and 39 wholesalers. Inspections were conducted at 136 retailers and 93 wholesalers, with show-cause notices issued and licenses revoked for distributing substandard cough syrups.
In a recent FDA operation, counterfeit cough syrup was detected in various drug stores and companies in October 2024.
Medical professionals, clinical establishments, and pharmacists have been directed to refrain from prescribing or selling medicines containing Propranolol.
A total of 36 samples were analyzed across 10 locations in Mumbai, Thane, Pune, Aurangabad, and Nagpur divisions. Out of these, 34 samples were identified as substandard, according to Minister Zirwal.
The substandard medicines included those for high blood pressure, diabetes, tuberculosis, heart disease, and blood purification. Notably, six samples of a specific pediatric cough syrup brand in Maharashtra were flagged as substandard.
As per the minister, it was reported that certain components were allegedly modified or combined, resulting in a new medicine being sold as “Pankreatine/Pancreatin”. Additionally, unauthorized companies were alleged to have supplied counterfeit/substandard medicines to government hospitals.
Minister Zirwal mentioned that the work of regular drug testing and control in various districts has been impacted due to 176 vacancies (19.4 percent) of Drug Inspectors. Maharashtra currently operates three testing laboratories located in Mumbai, Nagpur, and Pune. The government recognizes the necessity for an inquiry and stringent action, with plans to fill around 109 Drug Inspector posts through the Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC). Legal actions are initiated against unauthorized/spurious drugs following analysis of substandafake medications.
Despite the challenges, the minister clarified that regular drug testing and oversight are being enforced with the available resources at the Food and Drug Administration.
Efforts are ongoing to enhance the laboratory facilities in Nashik and Pune. Drugs are collected for analysis periodically as per the directives of the Drug Inspectors, and action is pursued in court against unauthorized/fake drugs.
