Imphal/Aizawl, Jan 20 (NationPress) In a series of operations conducted by security forces across Assam, Manipur, and Mizoram, authorities have confiscated heroin valued at Rs 4.65 crore and apprehended four individuals involved in drug trafficking over the last 24 hours, as reported by officials on Tuesday.

A police spokesperson in Imphal revealed that a drug trafficker, identified as Hriili Kaihrii (65), was arrested at the Phougakchao Ikhai Bazar checkpoint in Bishnupur district. Approximately 94 grams of heroin, concealed in eight soap cases, were seized from his possession. In a separate incident, the Manipur Police detained another trafficker, Mohammad Ajmir Hussain (39), in Tengdongyan, Imphal West district, recovering 310 grams of heroin. The total worth of the drugs confiscated in Manipur, believed to have been smuggled from Myanmar, is estimated at Rs 2.26 crore, according to the official.

In Assam, an anti-narcotics operation was executed based on specific intelligence at Kachudaram in Cachar district, resulting in the recovery of 356 grams of heroin valued at around Rs 2 crore. One suspect, identified as Anwar Hussain, was taken into custody, and legal proceedings have commenced to explore both the forward and backward linkages, police stated.

In Mizoram, following intelligence about narcotic trafficking in the Zote area of Champhai district, Assam Rifles troops swiftly conducted an operation on Monday evening. During this operation, they intercepted a scooter and, after a thorough inspection, uncovered 49.6 grams of heroin valued at approximately Rs 39 lakh. The contraband was being transported by an individual named K. Thangzalala. The arrested individual, along with the seized narcotics and the vehicle, was transferred to the Excise and Narcotics Department in Champhai district for further inquiry and necessary legal actions under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act of 1985.

This successful operation highlights the unwavering commitment of Assam Rifles to combat cross-border smuggling and eliminate the drug menace in Mizoram, as stated in an official release.

Mizoram shares a 510-km unfenced border with Myanmar and a 318-km porous mountainous border with Bangladesh. Myanmar’s Chin state serves as a crucial hub for the smuggling of drugs, exotic wildlife, and other prohibited items through six Mizoram districts: Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip. Additionally, five districts in Manipur—Churachandpur, Tengnoupal, Chandel, Kamjong, and Ukhrul—share a 398-km unfenced international border with Myanmar.
