Imphal/Aizawl, May 22 (NationPress) The flow of narcotic substances from Myanmar into the northeastern states of India remains relentless, with security forces confiscating drugs valued at over Rs 5.7 crore in Manipur and Mizoram, officials reported on Thursday.
A spokesperson for the defense reported that Assam Rifles captured a drug trafficker and seized a significant quantity of illegal narcotics in Noney district of Manipur on Wednesday night.
The alleged drug dealer was traveling in a truck from Imphal to Jiribam along National Highway-37.
Upon receiving intelligence from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence regarding potential narcotics trafficking, Assam Rifles personnel were alert and intercepted a vehicle that matched the description at a check post in Noney.
During the search, authorities recovered 569.24 grams of heroin and a substantial quantity of amphetamine/methamphetamine tablets from the apprehended trafficker. The overall value of the seized drugs was estimated at Rs 5 crore, packed in 50 soap cases and 49 sachets.
The spokesperson emphasized that Assam Rifles has been actively working to dismantle the illegal drug trade in Manipur over the past few months. The arrest of drug traffickers and confiscation of narcotics is a crucial step towards enhancing stability in the region.

In another development, personnel from the Border Security Force (BSF) at the Mizoram and Cachar Frontier, acting on specific intelligence, conducted a search operation in Vairengte within Mizoram’s Kolasib district, near southern Assam, and seized 7.042 kg of pseudoephedrine tablets (a precursor chemical) valued at Rs 7.04 lakh. One individual was also arrested in connection with this seizure, a BSF spokesperson reported. Officials confirmed that all drugs were smuggled from neighboring Myanmar.
The borders shared with Myanmar and Bangladesh span 1,643 km and 1,880 km, respectively, and are primarily unfenced, acting as significant transit points for various narcotics, particularly heroin and methamphetamine tablets, entering India.
